Would You Know A Menopause Symptom If You Had One?

Doctors still don’t know ALL of the symptoms a woman might experience during menopause because there are too many to nail down all of them. Losing one’s fertility is not the only thing a woman will experience during menopause. When most people think of menopause they think only of hot and cold flashes or night sweats. Signs and symptoms of a woman’s change occuring are not widely known and can be largely varied. The majority of menopausal symptomology are minute in nature and most will be slight enough an average woman probably won’t even realize it’s occuring. Some are incredibly noticable. It is very important for a premenopausal woman to be able to recognize common signs of menopause. Your knowledge of the signs and symptoms of menopause will help those around you understand what’s happening to them when it’s their turn.

Perhaps one of the most easily identified menopause symptoms is the mood swing. It is this symptom that makes menopause look a lot like puberty and (ironically) the early stages of pregnancy. A woman going through menopause is prone to sudden and often, irrational mood swings. She might be fine one minute. The next moment she will be crying her eyes out over something that never used to bother her and probably won’t bother her in a few minutes. If a woman in your life is experiencing these types of mood swings and is not pregnant (or going through puberty) it is possible that she is going through menopause. Be nice! The irregular heartbeat is perhaps the hardest menopause symptom to find. This is when your heart will suddenly beat faster or slower without your having to do anything to prompt the change. One example is of a woman who is sitting still who feels her heart suddenly start racing and then, after a moment, it slows way way down. Some women don’t notice this when it happens. Believe it or not, for some women, this only gets discovered when their doctors are looking for other things. The doctor is doing a routine heart listen and notices the symptom. If you are the right age, this might just be a sign that you are going through menopause.

The most obvious menopausal symptom is the loss of the monthly period. If your period suddenly stops or changes in any way you might be going through menopause. Remember that it is not always the absence of your monthly cycle that tells you that menopause is on the way. Some women have reported having heavier periods than usual right before menopause occurred. Any change in the monthly cycle should be reported to a doctor, especially if you are getting to the age where menopause usually occurs.

Menopause is not fun for anybody. Even if you aren’t going through “the change” yourself, somebody you love is going to go through it eventually which means that you will be affected too. You should definitely learn what you can about all of the menopause symptoms. Doing so will help you be more sympathetic to the women in your life who are going through it. In addition to being sympathetic it can also clue you in to what is happening to a woman when she reaches a certain age. You might even be the person who helps the woman in your life figure out what is going on with her body.
