Audition for singing

When choosing songs it’s a lot more difficult to choose songs for auditions than choosing songs to practice with. When practicing, the idea is to expand your vocal technique and you do this by challenging yourself with songs with broad ranges. It’s important to understand that audition songs should highlight your strengths and accomplishments.

For your singing audition, you need at least one ballad and one up-tempo song. Utilizing songs with stories and range should be a priority in your decision making. There is no in between when it comes to ballads, either you hate them or love them. If you’re a singer who loves ballads it will be hard to choose your favorite. When you choose a ballad, pick one that you can really relate to and the slow tempo areas will not seem so long. Choosing the songs will probably be the hardest part of your audition. The songs you choose should be songs that truly show off your talents. Although it’s not easy, it’s a great idea to expand the repertoire of songs you’re comfortable singing.

Plenty of variety will be one of the most important aspects to consider when choosing your list of songs. This will allow you to bring forth a well-balanced set of songs. A good choice is to start off with glorious high notes in the first song and then switch gears in the second.

Find songs that show off your strengths as a singer, and try to find variety within each song. If each of your songs has a narrow range, search for songs that allow you to show off some high notes right after you sing your belt song. Remember that range is the highest and lowest note that your voice can get to and all the notes in between. One thing to remember is you definitely don’t want to have each song bring the same kind of character.

Singing a pop song will probably be one of your stipulations, but don’t be afraid to also choose an early musical theater song, later songs, pop/rock songs or anything else to accompany it. Don’t fall into the trap of confining yourself to singing contemporary songs. Utilizing an earlier time period within your songs will be of great benefit when you have your audition.

When you have your audition, remember that everyone will have their eyes on you. They will be looking at your body language, your demeanor and your outfit. Think about what the character looks like. You want to suggest the character but not dress exactly like the character. If you don’t get the part the first time, you still want to make the best possible impression. It’s possible you will be asked to come back for a second audition, so be at your best every time.

Now that you know how to to choose the best songs for sinigng auditions, you might also be interested in perfecting your singing voice. For the highest quality singing training in video format, I highly recommend Per Bristow’s Sing With Freedom. And if you and your band are still struggling to get auditions and gigs, you’ll definitely want to check out Social Bandmaker.
